Craft Room Makeover Reveal
As far as “before and after” room reveals go, this one’s gotta be at the top of the heap here at The Navage Patch. Before we tackled this craft room makeover, we had already completed:
- A living room makeover
- Our guest bathroom renovation
- A deck rebuild
- The dining room makeover
- Our laundry room renovation
- Barish’s 1st room makeover
- Barish’s 2nd room makeover
Some of those were greuling slogs through the stinking swamps of misery (I’m looking at you, Guest Bathroom!).
Others dragged months beyond their expected finish dates (I procrastinated my pants off towards the end of the laundry room renovation, because I was terrified of building the cabinets).
But this little craft room makeover finished on time with minimal heartache, strife, sweary words, bloodshed, combat and tears!
It’s as if the universe truly wanted our hot mess of a craft storage room to be a clean, functioning and fully operational craft room and office.
And do you know what the best part about it is?
Do you think it’s the bright new walls and new floor?
Or maybe it’s all the storage space?
Do you imagine it’s the crafting tables?
Could it be my new office (aka, The Navage Patch Galactic Headquarters)?
Those are all fantastic things, and each is worthy of a dry martini, but the best thing is much subtler and far more precious.
The best part of our new craft room is the smile it brings to Handan’s face when she walks in and looks around.

When we started, Handan’s vision for the room was fairly well summed up by her mood board.
The overarching themes here are storage space and light – two things we just can’t seem to get enough of, especially when it comes to “work” spaces!
Getting rid of that god-awful orange on the walls was paramount. The moment we painted the walls white, the room opened up a thousand-fold.
The door to the craft room is of the French persuasion, and that means “pain in the tookus” for painting. Fortunately, Handan discovered a miracle product:
It allowed me to paint those French doors with ease without having to worry about scraping the glass afterwards.
Once “The Brightening” was complete, we put in the new floor. The old carpet was simply not appropriate for a craft room. We chose Pergo laminate after carefully considering all of our flooring options.
We bought some beautiful curtains at IKEA. They’re so cheap there – it’s incredible!
As this room had to double as the Executive suite for the CEO/President/Overlord/Clown-in-Chief of The Navage Patch, we cobbled together a little something for His Lordship to work at in his spacious and elegant Closet Office.
To solve most of our storage needs, I built two West Elm inspired storage towers.
That left a lot of little supplies that needed a home, so we built a rolling storage cart from old sewing machine drawers.
And we made a whole bunch of storage out of the old coffee cans that my babes has been collecting for the past 6 years!
The only thing you haven’t seen yet is the little solution we came up with for storing small paint bottles.

I love how light and airy it is! Unfortunately, my craft room has become the dumping ground and looks even worse than your before. I hope to change this in the next few weeks (ok, months!). I recently painted my basement family room a pale grey so pale it almost looks white and I love how it has brightened the space. I will never stop being amazed at the power of paint! You did a fantastic job!

Now I have more ideas and inspiration for my craft room! The whole room looks great! I love the flooring, antique sewing cabinet and the new paint. Gorgeous! My two favorite things have to be the cleverly disguised coffee cans (at first glance, I couldn’t tell they were coffee cans!) and the paint storage tray…I, too have a collection of cans and glass jars for repurposing and a paint collection that needs a permanent home…and I have some of those black wire shelving pieces from my college days and a couple drawers I picked up on the side of the road, so now I’m ready to get going on my craft room. Great makeover. I am in the middle of a room reno, painting the walls from a God-awful mauve to a sunny light yellow. Just that step made a huge difference in the perception of space. And more to come…installing the shelves for craft supplies, putting in a day bed, sewing area. The biggest challenge is keeping it neat afterwards. 😉
What a difference paint makes, right? And yes, keeping it neat is a challenge! I just think of how happy this room makes Handan (when it’s neat), and that keeps me motivated to keep it clean, lol! 🙂

I was planning to do 2 of our rooms, which look pretty much as you “before”, if not worse. And what? We unexpectedly got a puppy! She chews EVERYTHING! So all DIY plans are put on hold and a top priority is to make the house and the garden puppy-safe and to urgently learn about puppy training! Yes, she is adorable, but I envy you for being able to work on things like this beautiful room 🙂
And what a great tip about the masking liquid. Never heard of that. Hopefully will find it in UK.
Hmmmm…perhaps you could shut the puppy in those 2 rooms so he could chew everything up into small, manageable bits for you to sweep up? 😀

Your new room looks amazing. I have outgrown my craft room (aka guest bedroom) on the 2nd floor of my home, so I’ve expanded to the basement. Congrats on the makeover. Job very well done, not only on the execution, but coming up with such unique ideas in the first place. Just one question, where did you find the “command central” chair. I ask because I need to replace my own office chair. I kid you not, the dog ate mine. She is a teething puppy, and while I should have been suspicious that she was being so quiet, I did not check on her until all the stuffing had been removed from the back and the up and down control chewed off. Never underestimate the destructive powers of six month old Doberman. But enough of my challenge of typing from the floor. Really enjoy you posts and adventures.

It’s kinda pricey, but I needed it because my back was as wreck at the time, and sitting down to write and edit photos caused me a ton of pain. so many questions: how are you going to keep it so clean? I’m a real back slider that way. Did you try to match the paint to the existing closet doors and window frames? or did you just go all out and repaint everything. masking solution is fantastic. Can you access that bigger printer in the storage tower? where does overlord’s office chair go at the end of the work day? do keep it for the circuit/ heat press station. Inspiring,
Thank you, Anne! 1) We’ll keep it clean by cleaning after every project – it’s the only way. I don’t do that in my basement workshop, and it’s a disaster! 2) I painted EVERYTHING in that room – walls, ceiling, trim, baseboard! 3) Yep we designed that storage tower with that printer in mind. We can even access the scanner! 4) At the end of the day, the Supreme Overlord’s chair goes wherever it wants! Kidding, it stays at the desk, and the doors to my office stay open. If we need the room for a project, I’ll wheel the chair out of the room. If I want to sit while crafting, I’ll wheel the chair to one of the two crafting tables.
It looks absolutely fantastic! I wish mine looked that good. Unfortunately I have to work in the utility room with the octopus of HVAC ducts, water heater and softener, well pump tank, pantry storage, freezer and laundry.. I have 5 sewing machines, 7 totes of fabric and a cabinet full of art supplies. While not as beautiful as yours, it gets the job done. Thank goodness I get to have a great wood shop in the garage!

Oh Greg and Handan.. this is just so lovely. Who wouldn’t want to just jump in there and get started on a project.. instead of clearing and moving STUFF every time you feel inclined to do anything. And to have the outdoors through those wonderful windows.. as you work, super. I love what you have done, and that you make Handan smile! Kudos.

Beautiful room and I bet we will see many inspired projects born out of this space! I am just curious about one thing. Given the amount of DIY and crafts you guys do, is there enough storage there to hoard (sorry, store) all your supplies in there? I had a clean craft room and over the years, I had to keep adding storage carts for my expanding art supplies 🙂 Enjoy your new room!
We designed this room to be a workspace and a storage space for our most-used supplies. There is more than enough room in the storage towers and craft desk cabinets for our crafting supplies. The bigger “supplies” (meaning future projects, like old furniture, etc are stored in the basement). The reason the old craft room never got used is because it became a storage room for not just supplies but future projects. In my opinion, there needs to be a separation between storage space and work space, because once one intrudes on the other, no work gets done!

It looks so light and airy I’d feel more at home with a cocktail and sun hat! It’s so lovely and there so much space! It always makes it so much easier to do things when you’ve actually got room to do it. Plus that nice new office area must make doing computer work much better.

Unfortunately my craft room/office looks like your before photo. We are doing a whole house renovation that involves tearing down walls, banishing popcorn ceilings, updating kitchen and bathrooms and new flooring throughout so my craft room is now the storage room from hell. I have to pole vault over boxes and crap to reset the WiFi router and modem. But one day it will be my poor little (let’s just call it storage room for now) will get a whole new makeover as well. Can’t wait. BTW I love those roll out windows on your house. We had those kind of windows when I was growing up (pre air conditioner days) until the TVA energy efficiency program came along and those beautiful windows were replaced with ugly plain windows and storm windows along with central heat and air (which I’m not complaining about)
